The philosophy of interventions includes each member spelling out the consequences for the affected person if they do not accept the offer to go to rehab. In this way, the group is able to offer the person in need the opportunity to go to rehab, and the group is able to immediately deliver on that offer. Addiction is an insidious disease, and it can warp even the best intentions. For this reason, it is difficult to think about helping a person without first thinking about how to help oneself and the role one may be playing in the abuse. A family member of a person with an alcohol use disorder may be experiencing a disorder known asco-dependency. There are numerous ways that a concerned person can help someone who is experiencing an alcohol use disorder.

Intervention Donts

It’s important for an intervention to take these obstacles into consideration. Your loved one may not be receptive to your concerns, so you should try to anticipate their reactions by planning an intervention that addresses that. Many families choose to have a third party present to mediate the conversation, like a therapist, a counselor, or an interventionist. In a best-case scenario, an intervention for drug addiction leads to same-day or next-day treatment admission, which leads to long-term recovery. In some cases, your family member may not admit their addiction or recognize the need for rehab. In other cases, they may cling to their habit as their reason for living. Don’t give your loved one time to think about whether to accept the treatment offer, even if he or she asks for a few days to think it over. Doing so allows your loved one to continue denying a problem, go into hiding or go on a dangerous binge.

Unlike the hostile or haphazard interventions sometimes depicted in movies and television shows, interventions should be well-planned to ensure the environment is calm and controlled. You’ll want to present your loved one with some detailed suggestions for treatment, so you’ll need to do your research.

Still, a substance abuse interventionist can plant the seed of recovery in someone who’s initially not considering treatment. Yet it should not be forgotten that for many this is an addictive behavior so that attention needs to be given to how to change a difficult-to-change behavior. Although screening and brief interventions for risky or harmful drinking have considerable empiric support, their effectiveness and cost-effectiveness for misuse of other drugs remains to be determined. Hampering such efforts is the lack of a practical, brief screening instrument for identifying problematic drug use.

What you can do, though, is offer them steps they can take to address their problem—whether that’s calling a helpline, talking to a doctor or counsellor, entering treatment, or going to a group meeting. It can be tempting to vent your frustration or lose control of anger in an intervention. Many people have held on to anger about the addiction for years, but using words of love and support is a much more helpful way to reach the person who needs help.
